Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child

by Paul Petersen

STEM careers pay twice that which non-STEM careers do and offer high levels of job security. Even outside of the fields themselves, a large variety of roles require some prior knowledge. The digital skills needed for the workplace are also set to increase as 90% of jobs in the future will require some level of digital literacy. To help you explore STEM subjects with your child, we have shared some advice from a private nursery in Hampshire below.

STEM Family Outings

There are lots of STEM attractions that you can go visit with your child from space centres to the zoo. If your child is more of a hands-on learner, this is a great approach that you can take to supplement their school learning.

STEM Games

Another interactive means – STEM games. You don’t necessarily need to go out and buy anything. You can just work with what you already have to create cool science experiments, maths games and more. As a cool project to do together, you can create a homemade volcano using paper mache, baking soda, food colouring and vinegar. If your child enjoys playing video games, you can look for STEM games for them to play on their tablet or any other device. From mental maths challenges to coding games, you can find a game on pretty much anything.

STEM Shows

TV is a way that you can capture their attention and encourage them to do work outside of the classroom. There are many children’s shows that cover the various aspects. For example, shows like “Umizoomi” help young children to learn and understand the application of maths.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning opportunities can improve a child’s mental health and help them with their STEM learning. They can learn about concepts by seeing how they fit into the real world. Lessons that you can teach include the plant life cycle, the water cycle and much more.
